Leaders of Washington's life sciences community will gather for the WBBA Annual Meeting on the morning of October 28th, 2008 at the Seattle Sheraton. Attendees will hear from Gov. Christine Gregoire. Keynote Speaker will Mark Emmert, President of the University of Washington. Progress on the comprehensive life sciences strategy will be reviewed, and priorities for the coming year will be discussed. Frontiers of Research on Infectious Diseases

National Academy Member Dr. Guy Palmer of Washington State University and University of Washington Professor Sam Miller, Director of the Northwest Regional Center for Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research, will show examples of how innovative technology can help us better understand the complexities of infectious disease and how many such diseases arise from our friends in the animal kingdom (e.g., mad cow disease, avian flu).

The program will be moderated by Steve Davis, CEO of the Infectious Disease Research Institute. Dr. Jacquelline Sherris, Vice President of Global Programs at PATH, will be our discussant. The evening will include discussion of strategies to treat and prevent existing and emerging infectious disease. The presentations will be followed by questions from the audience and more opportunities for conversation at a reception immediately following the program.

CDC Influenza, also called flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year.

October through December is the best time to get vaccinated, but getting vaccinated later in the flu season still provides protection, as flu season normally peaks in January or later.
